John 'Tino' Argall

John Allen 'Tino' Argall, 66, of Pietro Drive, Negaunee Township, passed away unexpectedly Saturday, January 10, 2015 at UP Health System Marquette.
John was born September 6, 1948 in Ishpeming to Eugene J. and Betty Mary-Louise (Lee) Argall and graduated from Negaunee High School, Class of 1967. An outstanding football player for the Miners, he was known as the most feared linebacker in the U.P. Following graduation, he attended Northern Michigan University where he played football for the Wildcats.
Johnny was employed for Cleveland Cliffs Iron Co. and the Ruusi & Vivian Oil Co. before purchasing Tino's Bar and Pizza in Negaunee in 1982. As a prominent business owner, he was well known for supporting the local community and area schools. He loved sports, especially at the high school level, and avidly coached, refereed, attended and supported area athletics.
John was very proud of his 10 grandchildren. He always looked forward to and proudly attended whichever activity they participated in. In his free time he loved spending time at his camp on the Dead River Basin, and he will be missed being seen pontooning and jet-skiing to visit his many friends on the River. He especially enjoyed the many good times at 'Camp Bear Hollow.' Most recently, Johnny enjoyed golfing at Wawonowin Country Club where he was a member and bowling with his friends.
Surviving are 3 daughters: Michele (Robyn Roberts) Hansen of Madison, WI, Shannon (Steve) Terres of Ishpeming and Lori (Dennis) Brinck of Virginia Beach, VA; 2 sons: Shawn (Jeanne) and Jason (Rachel) Argall, both of Ishpeming; his grandchildren he was so very proud of: Kayla Hansen, Meghan, Anna and Anthony Terres, Parker, Carson and Preston Argall, and Gavin and Griffin Argall; 4 brothers: Eugene (Pauline) and Daniel (Sharon) Argall, both of Ishpeming, Jeffery (Kathy) Argall of Marquette and Peter Argall of Negaunee; 2 sisters: Victoria (Joe) Brady of Marquette and Debra (Dean) Luplow of Big Rapids; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins; and his 7 fur grand-babies. He was preceded in death by his parents and his grandson, Cory Nelson in 2005.
Memorial services will be held at 6:00 pm on Thursday, January 15th at Bethany Lutheran Church in Ishpeming with Rev. Warren Geier officiating. The family will greet relatives and friends from 2:00 pm until 5:45 pm at the church on Thursday, and also at a potluck dinner to be held in the church hall immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to: 'Negaunee Public Schools', 101 S. Pioneer Ave., Negaunee, MI 49866 for a scholarship fund to be established in John's memory.

He came to Washington in 1897 and lived in Bossburg until he moved to Spokane in 1902. He had a long and eventful career in Spokane starting with his appointment to the Board of public works in 1910. In 1911 he was named city purchasing agent, and was first elected city commiissioner in 1915. He retired in 1925 and was a candidate in 1927 but failed to be elected by a few votes.
He was a Freemason; in 1921 he is recorded as a member of a masonic fraternal organisation ( A. A. O. N. M. S.) in Washington, USA. He petitioned for the Masonic Scottish Rite Degrees in Spokane on 8th December 1913, when he declared he was 5 ft 11 inches tall, with brown eyes and dark hair and is a Christian. He was prominent in masonic circles, being Secretary of Oriental Lodge No 74 for a number of years. He belonged to Scottish Rite bodies and El Katif Shrine.

John C. Argall, 8822 Lincoln Place, city commissioner from 1915 to 1925 died this morning in a local hospital. He had been in ill health for about six months and was taken to the hospital two days ago. In recent years he had made his home with his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Lund, during the summers, and spent the winters in California.
Mr. Argall, who was 70, was born in England and came to the United States in 1869. In 1877 he moved west to California and then to Montana in 1886. For two years he was chief deputy sheriff for Granite county. He came to Washington in 1897 and lived in Bossburg until he moved to Spokane in 1902.
Surviving Mr. Argall is a daughter, Mrs. Margaret Lund, at the home; a son, Leland S., with the Midwest Canning company of Rochelle, Ill., who will arrive from the east Sunday night, and several grandchildren.

WEDDING BELLS DUNNE - ARGALL.
At Scots Church, Portland, on March 8th, the weddng took place of Gladys, younger daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Dunne, Portland, and John George, eldest son of the late Mr. G. Argall, and Mrs. Argall, of Kiata. The church was tastefully decorated by the friends of the bride, and the Rev. W. Shields was the officiating clergyman. The bride, who was given away by her father, wore a charming gown of off white moire silk, the bodice being plain with a heart-shaped neckline and long sleeves coming to a point over her hands. The draped skirt ended in a long train. A veil of Brussels lace kindly lent by Mrs. W. J. Dunne was worn over a coronet of orange blossoms, and the bride also carried a shower bouquet of white cactus, dahlias, gypsophlia and fern. The bridesmaids, Miss Jean Dunne (sister of the bride) and Miss Lyell McKenzie, wore long dresses of pale blue brocaded taffeta, the neckline, waist, sleeves and hemline being out- lined vwith tiny seed pearls. They also word blue net caught with red dahlias in the hair, and carried bou- quets of red dahlias and valotta lilies. Mr. Keith Argall was best man and Mr. Reg Argall groomsman (both brothers of the bridegroom), while the ushers were Messrs. Gordon and William J. Dunne (brothers of the bride.) During the signing of the register "I'll Walk Beside You" was sweetly rendered by Mrs. W. J. Dunne, the organ being Miss V. McEachern. The reception was held at the "Alcove" Cafe, the guests being received by Mrs. W. C. Dunne, assisted by Mrs. Argall. The bride's mother chose a burgundy marocain frock with black accessories, whilst Mrs. Argall, mother of .the bridegroom, wore a black ensemble and hat, trimmed with multi-colored flowers. After a sumptuous repast, the usual toasts were honored, and many telegrams of congratulations and good wishes read. Afterwards the guests assembled at 70 Hurd street to farewell the happy couple on their honeymoon. For travelling, the bride wore a soft grey suit with small navy hat trimmed with pale blue tulle and navy accessories. Many valuable gifts were received, including several handsome cheques. The honeymoon was spent at Mt. Gambier, and Mr. and Mrs. Argall's future home will be at Gorae West.

Whilst removing a frying-pan from a stove at his home at Gorae West this week, Mr. Jack Argall received nasty burns on the hand fromn the scalding'hot fat in the receptacle. He was at once brought, into Portland by a neighbor for treatment of the burns.

"On Monday at Wheal Agar, four miners were working on a floating sollar (platform) at the 205 fathom level when a piece of timber slipping down the shaft knocked the sollar into the water. The men in the level about, hearing screams, saved three of the miners by throwing them ropes, but a lad named Argall, of Redruth, was drowned".

Notes: At the time of the accident the mine was full of water to the 205 fathoms level where deceased, the agent, and three others were on a raft putting in some timber to make a road too many got on one end of the raft causing it to lurch and precipitate three of them into the water one got on to some ground at the end of the level two the agent pulled on board, but Argal sunk, and his body was not recovered till some days afterwards. The raft had been in use about a fortnight, and was considered to be sufficiently steady.
The death is recorded in the GRO indexes for the Redruth Registration District, in the March quarter of 1882, under reference 5c 172. He is listed as John Henry Argall, aged 17.

John Henry Argall, 63, resident of Iron Mountain for the last 33 years, died at 4:15 Saturday afternoon at the General Hospital, following a brief illness.
In 1904 he moved to Norway, Mich. & remained there 1 year before coming to Iron Mountain. H worked at the Chapin Iron Ore Mine for 17 years.
Beside his widow, Katherine, 1 brother, Charles, Australia. & a sister, Mildred, England, survive.
Burial will be in Cemetery Park.

JOHN H. ARGALL CALLED BY DEATH AT GROVELAND
Funeral services were held in Sonora Friday for John H. Argall, 40, who died at his home located two miles above the Oakland Recreation Camp in the Hetch Hetchy district on Tuesday, January 5. Following services at 10 a.m., he was buried in the Divide cemetery at Groveland. He was quite well known in Mariposa county, having been here at different times. The cause of his death was given as a heart attack. At the time of his death he, with his wife and her mother, Mrs Nicholis, who had come to visit them during the Christmas holidays and Bob House, a guest, were snowed-in by approximately three feet of snow. It took House several hours to get out from the ranch to get assistance. He was born February 3, 1887. Surviving are his widow, Annie Argall, of Groveland; father, Harry Argall, of Cathey's Valley; his step mother, Mrs. Edna Argall; half sister, Mrs. Edna May Day, and half brother, Homer Argall, of Cathey's Valley; two other half-brothers. Walter Argall of Groveland and Francis Argall of Englewood.

THE LATE LANCE-CORPORAL J. H. ARGALL.
Mr. P. S. Argall, of Gilbert-street, Adelaide, has received news stating that his brother, Lance-Corporal J. H. Argall, has died whilst a prisoner of war in Germany, on September 9. Lance-Corporal Argall was in his 31st year. He was born at Thebarton, and educated at the Grote-street school. He left Adelaide on April 1, 1915, and served both at Gallipoli and in France. He was well known in sports circles.

(From a correspondent) My grandfather (Edwin, #2337) lived with his family at 8 Burley Ave in East York and they had a greenhouse right across the road where he and my Uncle John grew flowers and sold them to make a living. When my grandfather died, my Uncle John took over the business. My aunt Freda and her husband, Burt, took over the family house and looked after my grandmother until she died. They lived there until they sold it to Hogan Pontiac, (a car dealer, so they could expand their car lot).
(There may be another George B Argall marrying in 1966, he said that his dad had found another Argall living in Ft Lauderdale and his name was John Argall he may have had a son by the name of George B and that is in Dade county where they lived).
Freda and her husband, Burt, moved to Salmon Ave in East York. Then my aunt Dora moved in with them when her husband Jack died. When she (Dora) died around 1967 or so (and my Uncle Burt died around the same time), my aunt Freda moved in with my uncle John (#2398) and his wife Queenie in Hollywood, Pembrook Pines, Florida. Queenie was his wife's nick name.
